The honest answer to "what does new flooring cost?" is that it depends on three things: the material you pick, how many square feet you're covering, and how much has to happen before the new floor goes down. That last one is where most surprise numbers come from — and it's the part a phone quote can't see.
Here's a straight look at what flooring installation actually runs in the Houston area in 2026, so you can budget with real numbers instead of guesses.
Typical installed price ranges
These are all-in ranges — material plus labor — for a standard installation in a Montgomery County or greater-Houston home. They assume a reasonably flat slab in good shape. Prep, tear-out, and stairs are extra (more on that below).

If you already bought your own material — say, from a warehouse store — you're paying for labor only, which is lower. Plenty of our customers do exactly that, and we're happy to install what you supply. We'll also tell you honestly whether what you picked will hold up on your slab.
What actually drives the price up
The per-square-foot number above is just the starting point. Here's what moves it:
Tear-out and haul-off
Pulling up and disposing of your existing floor takes labor, and it varies a lot by material. Carpet comes up fast. Glued-down tile or a failed floor that has to be chipped off the slab takes far longer — sometimes it's the single biggest line item on a job.
Floor prep
This is the one most quotes skip and most budgets forget. A slab is rarely perfectly flat. Grinding down high spots and filling low ones so the finished floor doesn't rock, telegraph, or gap is real work — and on a Houston slab it's frequently necessary. Skipping it is why so many floors fail early.
Moisture mitigation
Slab-on-grade foundations across our area push moisture up through the concrete year-round. When a slab tests above what the flooring adhesive can tolerate, a moisture-mitigation coating has to go down first. It adds a day and some cost, and it's cheaper than replacing a floor that delaminated because nobody checked.
Stairs
Stairs are priced per step, not per square foot, because each tread and riser is essentially a small custom install. A staircase can add meaningfully to a job — but done right, it's also the part guests notice first.
Transitions, trim, and moving furniture
Thresholds between rooms, quarter round, and standard furniture moving are usually built into a good quote. Specialty items — pianos, gun safes, pool tables — get handled separately.

Two homes on the same street can have very different flooring bills. One has a flat slab and existing carpet that lifts in an afternoon. The next has a cupped subfloor, glued tile, and a moisture reading that calls for mitigation. Same square footage, very different price.
